Decade parade marks Hat Works’ 10th

Join the birthday celebrations as one of Stockport’s most prominent landmarks, Hat Works, turns ten in April! To mark the occasion, a new hat competition, Decade Parade: Small Hats Big Look, has been launched to encourage anyone over 16 to design and make a miniature hat. The theme is all about taking inspiration from your local market to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Stockport Market Charter, which is taking place later in the year.
The closing date for entries is Tuesday 23 March. Finalists will be invited to a catwalk fashion show, where their creation will be modelled for a panel of prestigious judges. Prizes of £250 in holiday vouchers and inclusion into the special birthday exhibition at Hat Works will be awarded to the winner.
Competition entry forms are available from Hat Works by calling 0161 355 7770. Alternatively, a version can be downloaded from www.hatworks.org.uk under
the Decade Parade banner.

Alan Lowndes is a greater painter than Lowry

This exhibition spans nearly 40 years of the artist Alan Lowndes’ work, and was developed to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Stockport Market, where Lowndes rented a studio for much of his early career.
Born in Heaton Norris, Stockport provided much of the inspiration for his work, even after he moved to St Ives in 1959. Famous for his depictions of Stockport streets, mills, parks, and the iconic viaduct, Lowndes created scenes for his characters to inhabit, where they carried out everyday activities like hanging out the washing or eating fish and chips.
Lowndes’ work reflected a movement in the mid-1950s for writing about, photographing and painting working-class people, depicting their aspirations, hopes and daily lives. His work also inspired the naming of the world’s longest-running TV soap, Coronation Street.
Speaking about Lowndes in 1988, the painter Sir Terry Frost commented:
“Many people consider Alan Lowndes to be a naïve painter. He wasn’t; he was a great painter.” He also said that he thought Lowndes was a greater painter than Lowry.
This exhibition brings together paintings from private collections across the UK, complementing pieces from Stockport’s Permanent collection. It has been developed by Stockport Art Gallery in partnership with the Crane Kalman Gallery and Lowndes’ biographer, Jonathan Riley.
The display provides a backdrop for a wealth of creative workshops, interactive talks and advice sessions, all designed to inspire creativity.

TREASURE FROM TRASH

Hat Works and Stockport Story Museum are hosting a contemporary exhibition (from 9 March to 7 June) which showcases a selection of imaginative and inventive objects created using recycled materials and designed by makers from around the world. Turning waste into practical items proves that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! The content of the exhibition will be different for each venue, with Hat Works focusing on fashion and personal adornment items such as hats, jewellery and bags. By contrast, Stockport Story Museum will showcase pieces associated with homes, toys and leisure.
The exhibition aims to encourage the visitor to reconsider what they throw away, and to inspire them to recycle.
Both exhibitions are free to enter and are open during normal opening hours. Call 0161 355 7770 for more details, or visit www.hatworks.org.uk or
